It is with great excitement that we announce the AP Capstone™ program will now be implemented at Procter Hug High School starting in the 2017-2018 school year! GATE Institute students will be in the first phase of this roll out program, followed by the Health Science Academy in the 2018-2019 school year.
What is AP Capstone? The College Board’s AP Capstone is an innovative and engaging college-level program for high school students that complements and enhances discipline-specific AP courses. It’s built on two new courses—AP® Seminar and AP Research—that immerse students in the practice of critical skills needed to distinguish themselves in college and life. AP Capstone is the pinnacle of the high school experience, encouraging a passion for learning and transforming students into curious, collaborative, and independent thinkers with skills that are valued and sought after by colleges and universities. For more information on AP Capstone please see the program brochure: AP Capstone Program Brochure. Some benefits from AP Capstone include fostering critical and creative thinking, argumentation and research skills in an interdisciplinary format. It helps identify students who are prepared to enter college with research, writing and collaboration skills, provides consistent, externally validated measure of student ability and demonstrates student research and writing abilities through a 5,000-word scholarly research paper. What else? Students can achieve an AP Capstone Diploma! What is an AP Capstone Diploma? Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both the AP Capstone courses and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing will receive the AP Capstone Diploma! Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both of the AP Capstone courses but not on the four additional AP Exams will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate, signifying successful performance in those courses. We are very excited to combine AP Capstone with The GATE Institute at Procter Hug High School! At the GATE Institute, students will complete the Seminar and Research courses as part of their English courses required for graduation. This approach meshes GATE Institute instructional strategy with AP curriculum. For more information on the new Capstone courses, please see the course descriptions: AP Seminar and AP Research. |
